What’s on in Penela: Typical Festa in Santo Amaro

By Graham

The attached picture is of a children’s event at the festa held in the village of Santa Amaro each year. We liked it because it showed a very traditional game being played…

The clay 5 litre jug is filled with water and held on a rope above the road. A child is blindfolded and spun around 3 times. They then walk ten paces toward the just guided (or not) by their friends shouting out directions. Once they think that they are close to the jug they try to smash it with a long stick. If they miss it and hit the rope the water will spill on top of them. If they smash the jug they win a prize.
